WW1, German machine gun optical gun sight.
Made by the reknown optical sight manufacturer Carl Zeiss. The metal cast body has a removable top plate giving access to the prisms and which is stamped Carl Zeiss, Jena, 3x12. The two glass lenses are mounted in brass frames. On the base of the sight there is a slotted runner to fix to the gun, which is stamped 459, and No. 17 on one end.
The lenses are very clear and sharpe, and aiming cross hairs can clearly be seen when viewing (see last photo).
