A Wartime Log - F/O Richard Woods, POW Stalag Luft 1.

This is a 'Special Edition' hardback book.

RAF, flying officer, Richard Woods - bomb aimer, was part of a Lancaster bomber crew who were on 'operations' to Nuremberg, Germany, on the night of 30-31st March 1944. This raid later became infamous in the history of Bomber Command due to the single heaviest loss incurred by them, that night. Out of 795 aircraft 95 were lost, resulting in 545 aircrew being killed and 157 becoming prisoners of war. Richard Woods was one of those airmen who became a POW.

Sent to Stalag Luft 1, Richard (Dick) Woods spent the next 13 months as a captive there, until liberation came in May 1945. To help officer's pass the time of day all prisoners were given, via the YMCA, a diary/book called 'A Wartime Log', to use however they liked. Some hardly used them, others used them as a daily diary, whilst some talented POW's filled their Logs with fine drawings and text. Richard Woods, being a particularly fine example of this.

Published for the first time, this book is a faithful reproduction of his Wartime Log, with 232 pages of text and numerous colour and black and white photographs.

The book gives the reader a glimpse into what POW life was like, in German captivity, during the Second World War.
